Food security in the Caribbean – Phito Stories live event in Wageningen

From last-minute chaos to a night full of great stories, delicious food and lovely people.

“The catering just cancelled – a family emergency.”

It’s the morning of our Phito Docu & Dialogue event, and it seems like things just keep going wrong. Just 10 days before the event we had to change the venue. Then this morning one of our guest speakers cancelled due to illness… and now the catering. And that still wasn’t the last thing that would go wrong that day.

For weeks we’ve been preparing this evening to celebrate the Phito Stories and make the launch of the last episode feel special. We wanted to create a night to connect, reflect, and get inspired together. And then, it felt like the universe kept testing us.

But we passed the test.

But here we are, three days later, still smiling. It feels like we passed.

It was such a wonderful evening. So many lovely people came together to learn more about Phito, to explore the topic of the night – food security in the Caribbean – and to discuss the future of farming over some delicious food (And yes, we did find a replacement caterer, Nigerian-inspired instead of Caribbean, but absolutely delicious nonetheless. Oh, and we found a great back-up speaker too.)

A night to remember.

What a way to close out season one of Phito Stories: episode 5 on the big screen in the beautiful Visum Mundi in Wageningen, three inspiring guest speakers sharing project insights and their perspectives on food security in the Caribbean, great food and drinks, and so many good conversations with all of you.

Meet the people who made the evening.

We were so lucky to have three wonderful guests join us that night, each bringing their own unique perspective.

Wouter Beekman: Expert in co-design and digital tools, he shared how the Phito app is built with farmers through participatory design and user needs assessment.

Bernise Stoffer: Representing DCALFA, Bernise spoke on food security challenges for small-scale Caribbean farmers and how organisations like DCALFA are making a real difference on the ground.

James Ocalia: With heritage and project experience in Aruba, James brought personal stories from the field: challenges, wins and lessons from his time in Aruba.

We think this evening turned out wonderful thanks to all of you who joined and supported us online and offline and we are already looking forward to the next.
