Phito comprises of nine food system partners across seven food systems, each with its own unique characteristics, covering various landscapes, agricultural practices and farming challenges.
Small and medium-sized farmers face a range of challenges in modern-day agriculture, from staying competitive to making their practices more sustainable.
To support them, Phito is developing a farmer-centred app built around real-world needs. Across seven diverse food systems, project partners are working closely with farmers and other stakeholders to understand their specific challenges, practices, and everyday struggles.
Stretching from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, each region brings its own environmental conditions, agricultural practices, and cultural traditions, reflecting the complexity and diversity of farming across Europe and beyond.
Phito’s seven food systems cover a broad spectrum of agricultural landscapes, from humid river deltas and dry Mediterranean orchards to alpine foothills and isolated island communities.
These regions were chosen for their agricultural diversity, but also because they face some of the most pressing challenges in European agriculture, such as climate change, land abandonment, economic isolation, and an aging farming population. Many of these areas are among the EU’s most fragmented and under-resourced farming systems, making them ideal for developing and testing solutions with the farmers and communities who need them most.
By working across these seven food systems, Phito is developing solutions that directly address the unique local environmental and socio-economic challenges farmers face.
By working across these diverse food systems, Phito is co-developing solutions with farmers—ensuring that technology meets real-world needs. The insights gained from these regions will strengthen farming communities locally while at the same time inspiring broader adoption in other parts of the world.
