Digital Innovation for Organic Farming: ÖMKi Showcases the Phito Project at ÖKO Expo 2025

At ÖKO Expo 2025 in Debrecen, ÖMKi highlighted how digital innovation for organic agriculture is shaping the future of sustainable farming. Through the Phito project, visitors explored new digital tools designed to connect farmers, advisors, and researchers across Europe.

Between September 9–10, 2025, Debrecen became the heart of Hungary’s eco-agriculture scene as the ÖKO Expo Exhibition and Conference returned for its sixth edition. Organized by the National Chamber of Agriculture, this year’s event took place at the University of Debrecen’s Innovation Center, and on its first day, drawing more than 700 visitors eager to exchange knowledge, explore innovation, and discuss the future of sustainable farming.

A Hub for Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture

ÖKO Expo has become the most significant professional meeting point for everyone involved in organic and regenerative agriculture; farmers, processors, researchers, advisors, students, and policymakers alike. This year’s program focused on the vital connection between soil life, regenerative farming practices, and agricultural innovation, complemented by roundtable discussions, field demonstrations, and interactive presentations.

ÖMKi at the Forefront of Research and Innovation

As one of Hungary’s leading voices in applied agricultural research, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (ÖMKi) participated both as an exhibitor and a contributor to the professional program. Visitors to the ÖMKi stand explored the institute’s latest domestic and international projects, learning how ongoing research supports practical improvements in arable farming, horticulture, and animal husbandry.

ÖMKi researchers were available throughout the event to discuss new findings, on-farm trials, and collaborative initiatives, emphasizing the importance of connecting research with real-world agricultural practice.

Spotlight on Digitalization: The Phito Project

A highlight of ÖMKi’s presence this year was the Phito project, showcased at an outdoor stand centered around the Phito Van, our mobile hub designed to introduce the digital side of sustainable farming.

Visitors had the chance to explore the Phito app, a new digital platform that brings together farm management tools, expert advice, best practices, and community features, all in one place. From maps and planners to a growing marketplace and peer-to-peer exchange, Phito helps make innovation accessible to every farmer.

And because learning should be fun, visitors who tested their digital knowledge in a short quiz were rewarded with a Phito straw hat, which will be a light reminder that curiosity is the first step toward innovation.

The Phito Van isn’t stopping in Debrecen. It’s currently touring across Europe, connecting with local farming communities and demonstrating how digital solutions can strengthen sustainability, collaboration, and resilience in agriculture.
